RCIN 404918

Lely was a Dutch painter who spent his career in England, perpetuating the manner of Anthony van Dyck. He presents the young Princess Mary, daughter of James II, as Diana the Huntress with a crescent moon on her forehead. In 1677 she married her first cousin, William III of Orange, with whom she ruled Great Britain after 1688. First recorded in the Collection in 1710
