Cuvette à tombeau

RCIN 36082

The distinctive pale blue ground, called petit verd, on this flower vase, serves as a perfect foil for the darker tones of the tavern scene at the centre. The scene is partly inspired by a painting by David Teniers the Younger, and is repeated on the cuvette Mahon (displayed left). Acquired by George IV when Prince of Wales, probably at auction in 1805.
