Cameron's trademark style is shown here in this portrait of the writer and historian Thomas Carlyle (1795–1881) taken in London in 1867. The blurriness adds to the emotional intensity of the work, aligned with Cameron's aim to faithfully record 'the greatness of the inner as well as the features of the outer man'.
