George Washington Wilson produced some of the first photographic souvenirs of Scotland

GEORGE WASHINGTON WILSON (1823–93)

Sligachan, Isle of Skye

c.1860

Albumen print | 7.7 x 6.8 cm (image) | RCIN 2320184

The settlement of Sligachan is located near to the Cuillin mountain range on the Isle of Skye. The hotel in this photograph was built in 1830 and was a popular base for tourists to explore the mountains, or munros. Wilson would often include hotels in his photographs to publicise the business. This benefited Wilson as many of his photographs were then sold at hotels and guest houses. As Wilson’s success grew, he went on to produce and distribute his work on an industrial scale, establishing one of the largest printing establishments in the world.
