Columbo, View of the Ceylon Railway Incline

RCIN 2701638

The Prince travelled by train from Colombo to Kandy. Construction of the Ceylon Railways began in the 1860s after English coffee planters demanded a means of efficiently transporting their produce for shipment. The railway was built over difficult terrain with steep inclines, involving tunnelling and cutting through solid rock formations, as seen here. At some points of the journey, the train may even require a second engine.

During the Prince's train journey to Kandy, at a particularly steep incline called 'Sensation Rock', the Prince moved to the engine carriage so that he might better see the views
