This portrait depicts Balthazar Carlos aged six wearing hunting attire. He was the only son of Philip IV and his first wife, Isabella of Bourbon. He was heir apparent to all the kingdoms, states and dominions of the Spanish monarchy, but died prematurely in 1646, aged 16.
