Depictions of the gardens at Windsor Castle and other royal residences

FRANZ XAVER WINTERHALTER (1805-73)

Queen Victoria with Prince Arthur

Signed and dated 1850

RCIN 405963

One of the main features of the garden was the Pavilion Terrace which contained a formal geometric garden with walks laid with imitation lava. The flowerbeds were filled with geraniums, stocks and heliotropes. This part of the garden was further enhanced with statues of the four seasons and a large tazza (shallow bowl or vase on a pedestal). The Pavilion Terrace forms the backdrop to Winterhalter’s painting of Queen Victoria with the infant Prince Arthur.
