EMPRESS FRIEDRICH, CONSORT OF FRIEDRICH III, EMPEROR OF GERMANY & KING OF PRUSSIA (1840-1901)

An Old Woman, called the 'Artist's Mother'

May 1878

Oil on canvas | 66.6 x 53.0 cm (support, canvas/panel/stretcher external) | RCIN 407816

This is a copy after Rembrandt's 'Old Woman' (then referred to as 'The Artist's Mother'), which is still in the Royal Collection (RCIN 405000). The artist-Princess has captured the technique and spirit of Rembrandt's original to a remarkable extent.
