dated 17 Aug 1831

Pencil, watercolour, ink | 21.3 x 16.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 980014.j

A watercolour showing a young girl filling a pitcher with water from a spring, after Richard Westall (RCIN 925132). She is shown full-length, facing forward and leaning on a rock. She is holding a small wild flower in one hand.
Inscribed lower right: Victoria. August 17th 1831.

Princess Victoria received her first drawing lesson from the artist Richard Westall in 1827, when she was eight years old. She started by copying Westall’s drawings of horses, hands and eyes and later copied some of his finished studies, all produced for this purpose.
This drawing was a birthday gift for Princess Victoria's mother, The Duchess of Kent, who was born 17 August 1786.
