Prince Arthur (1850-1942)

Louise continued to practice her sculpture under the tutelage of distinguished sculptor Joseph Edgar Boehm. Boehm (1834–90) was a Vienna born artist who worked as a medallist and a sculptor. In 1880, he was appointed Sculptor-In-Ordinary – a position in the Royal Household in Scotland. Under Boehm’s tutelage, Louise learnt more advanced skills.

This white marble bust depicts her younger brother Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, as a young man, wearing uniform. Prince Arthur died at the age of 91 years, 8 months and 15 days – exactly the age, to the day, as Louise, who passed away three years before him; making them jointly the longest living of all Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s children.
