PRINCE ALBERT

Letter to Henry Labouchere, regarding the Great Exhibition

9 July 1849

This letter by Prince Albert to Henry Labouchere, President of the Board of Trade, shows his intimate involvement in the origins of the idea. His suggestion may have been prompted by his awareness of the trade fairs that took place in a number of German towns, as well as national exhibitions in France. London, as the capital of the first industrial nation, offered a grander stage for something altogether more ambitious.
