Following the introduction of photography in Europe in 1839, photographic studios began being established in Asia during the 1840s to1860s. This portrait by August Sachtler depicts two Chinese women and a male attendant. In the early 1860s, German August Sachtler (d.1874) and Dane Kristen Feilberg (1839-1919) established the first photographic studio in Singapore, trading under the name Sachtler & Co. This photograph is from an album presented to Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900) following his travels in Malaysia and Singapore.
