Natural History in the Royal Library

Our changing relationship with the natural world, from Tudor to Victorian times

THOMAS MARTYN (1760-1816)

Paintings of natural history, executed at Mr Martin's Academy, Great Marlborough Street, London / Martyn Thomas.

1794

RCIN 1057112

Thomas Martyn, a natural history draughtsman, established his Academy for young men “possessing a natural genius for drawing and painting, to be cultivated under his immediate sole direction” in the art of delineating natural history. His publications are now quite rare; this volume appears to be of the nature of a sample book showing representative work from his Academy. Many of his works were collected by George, Prince of Wales for his Carlton House library.
