HENRI AUGUSTE (1759-1816)

Ewer

1798 - 1809

RCIN 48456

Stéphanie de Beauharnais (1789–1860), the cousin of Napoleon's first wife Josephine, was adopted by Bonaparte in 1796. To celebrate her marriage to Karl, Grand Duke of Baden in 1806, the emperor presented her with a toilet service and other works of silver gilt, each decorated with the initials SN for Stéphanie Napoleon. Among them was this ewer, which was acquired by Queen Mary in 1934.
