FRANCIS COTES (1726-70)

Princess Louisa and Princess Caroline

Signed and dated 1767

RCIN 404334

This painting depicts the daughters of Frederick, Prince of Wales: Princess Louisa and Princess Caroline. It was commissioned by their mother, Augusta, Princess of Wales, and demonstrates the importance of music within their family.

Princess Louisa is shown seated beside a music stand; with her left hand she holds a guitern (an early form of a guitar) and her right hand rests on a musical score. The Princess Caroline stands next to her sister with one hand resting on the back of the chair and the other holding a roll of music; a chamber organ is shown to her left.
