Shell case

1917

RCIN 69822

This engraved brass shell case is inscribed Ricordo Alti Piani Asiago Cesuna which can be translated as, 'I remember Asiago Plateau, Cesuna'. The Asiago Plateau saw much bloodshed between the Italians and Austro-Hungarians. In May 1917 (the date inscribed on the base of the shell) the Italians launched the tenth Battle of the Isonzo. However, the Austro-Hungarians outperformed the Italians in their defensive strategy, ammunition capability and army training. By the end of the month the Italians had lost more than 128,000 men.
