Piece of shrapnel

1914

RCIN 69462

This is a piece of a shell which was later mounted onto an oak plaque. The oak came from the hospital ship SS Rohilla which was wrecked off Whitby, North Yorkshire on 30 October 1914. The Rohilla was the first ship requisitioned as a hospital ship during the First World War and was on its way to Belgium to pick up injured soldiers when it ran aground. Of the 229 people aboard, 84 died.
