Crest from a Turkish field gun

1915-20

RCIN 69450

This crest was taken from a Turkish field gun that was captured by 2nd Battalion, The Black Watch, near Beirut in October 1918 and later presented to King George V on behalf of Lieutenant-Colonel John Stewart. In Stewart's explanatory letter to a Mr Hansell, he notes how rare gun plates like this one are due to high demand for them as souvenirs.

The gun the crest was taken from was given to the Duke of Atholl. It was placed outside the Village Hall in Blair Atholl, Perthshire, the estate village for Blair Castle, home of the Duke, but later sold as scrap during the Second World War.
