Louis XVI’s sister-in-law, the comtesse de Provence, ordered this chest of drawers from Riesener on 8 February 1776 for her bedroom at Versailles. He worked on the project with great speed and delivered the chest of drawers only 50 days later, on 30 March. It was the most expensive chest of drawers Riesener made that year, perhaps because of the extraordinarily fine quality of the gilt-bronze mounts and marquetry.
