Three throwing rings (war quoits)

nineteenth century

RCIN 62147

Throwing rings (quoits) are associated with Sikh armed fighters known as Akalis or Nihangs, and were worn in a tall conical turban or bunga dastar. When thrown in a spinning motion by an experienced warrior, they could be effective against an enemy up to 15 metres away.

These throwing rings formed part of the collection of Queen Victoria’s son, Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh.
