State sword (afena)
nineteenth centuryRCIN 62823
Swords (afena) formed an essential part of the regalia of high-ranking members of the Asante court. They were carried by official messengers, held during the enstoolment of the paramount chief and deposited by the bed of a deceased chief when lying in state. Cast gold ornaments representing political and military strength hung from the hilt or scabbard.
This sword is said to have been taken from King Kofi Karikari of Asante (c.1837–1884) by British troops during the Anglo-Asante War of 1873–74. In 1890, Queen Victoria lent it for display at the Royal Military Exhibition which was held in the grounds of the Royal Military Hospital in Chelsea, London.
