Miquelet lock gun. Lock and stock Algerian, barrel French, c.1784-85. Iron, silver and gilt, hardwood, coral. 0.62 calibre. Lock inscribed in Arabic Made by Mustafa, dated 1199 A.H (1784-85 A.D.) Barrel, stamped Merley Carteron, Saint Etienne proof mark, TORDU (twisted construction). As well as an extensive collection of contemporary and historic British and European weapons, armour and other equipment, the Prince Regent also amassed a huge range of arms from further afield. This musket formed part of the lavish gift presented to the Prince Regent by the Dey of Algiers. Other gifts from Algeria included jewelled swords, fire arms, caparisons, saddles, and stirrups.
