Grand Vestibule: The British Monarchy and the World

The Grand Vestibule at Windsor Castle reflects interaction between the monarchy and the wider world

Box

RCIN 184809

The interlocking enamel design in green and blue echoes Persian micro mosaic techniques (khatam kari), often used in Islamic inlay. It can be found on wood and bone caskets, as well as across buildings and furniture. The shape of this box suggests it was originally intended to hold a book, possibly a Qur’an.

Presented to King Charles III when Prince of Wales by HH Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al Missned, wife of the Emir of the State of Qatar, during the incoming State Visit to the United Kingdom, 2010
