Design for a medallion

1768

RCIN 913291

This pen and ink drawing is a design for medals to be presented to winners from exhibitions held at the Royal Academy.

Although it is unknown whether this design was actually struck for prize-winners, it was intended that the King would award medals in person to successful artists who displayed at the Academy's annual exhibition. This design appeared as the headpiece to William Chambers's Dissertation on Oriental Gardening, published in 1772.
