A guide to the history of frames in the Royal Collection

BRITISH SCHOOL, 17TH CENTURY

Louis XIII style

RCIN 7403229

Popular in the later Stuart reign of Charles II (1630-85) and James II (1633-1701), this British interpretation of a French design has a gentle ogee profile and various ornament; multiple sight ornaments, a scrolling acanthus-and-husk panel, and leaf-and-tongue back edge. Later variations of this style included the ornament in a much deeper relief.
