Frames in the Royal Collection

A guide to the history of frames in the Royal Collection

ATTRIBUTED TO? THOMAS ALLWOOD : LONDON

Frame for RCIN 403523, West, Augustus Duke of Sussex

RCIN 7403523

There are several of these exceptionally fine Carlo Maratta frames, made for paintings by Benjamin West (1738-1820), in the Collection. The basic profile is the same as other Carlo Maratta's, but the carving is enriched and more extravagant and detailed than is usually found.

They have been attributed to Thomas Allwood, an eighteenth century London framemaker.  He later went to work on Carlton House for George IV when Prince of Wales, as well as create a set of frames for works by George Stubbs (1724-1806) for him.
