Fabergé in the Royal Collection

An introduction to Fabergé in the Royal Collection

Vase

RCIN 49821

In 1908, King Edward VII visited his nephew, Tsar Nicholas II, at Reval in modern-day Estonia.  Although the meeting involved various diplomatic discussions, it was also a family reunion with banquets and balls.  It took place entirely at sea, hosted on the Tsar's yachts the Standart and Polar Star.  To mark the occasion, gifts were exchanged, and among them was this Fabergé vase, presented by the Tsar to his uncle.  It is made from nephrite, a type of jade, and mounted in silver-gilt and gold.  On the same occasion, King Edward VII gave his nephew a naval sword inscribed 'For His Imperial Majesty Emperor of All Russia Nicholas II from His Loving Uncle Edward, Reval 1908'.
