CORNELIS MASSYS (C.1510-62)

Henry VIII

c.1548

RCIN 600814

In his youth Henry VIII (r.1509–1547) was famed for his athletic figure, but by the end of his life the King looked very different. Cornelis Massys engraved this print when he came to England during the 1540s. Although the King is richly dressed in fine robes, Massys depicts the King as he appeared towards the end of his reign, old and overweight.
