Brighton Pavilion: The Making of a Pleasure Palace

This pair of rectangular upright secretaires, veneered in ebony and with panels of Japanese lacquer, were purchased for George IV by his Clerk-Comptroller of the Kitchen and ‘scout’, Jean-Baptiste Watier. They were sent to the Royal Pavilion, Brighton on 22 November 1817.
The maker, Bernard Molitor, produced expensive furniture in an elegant and relatively unchanging neo-classical style.
