Designs for the Pavilion at Brighton: views of the grounds

This watercolour shows Humphry Repton’s planned landscaping of the grounds at the Royal Pavilion. The scene looks from the stables across the proposed basin (with an orchestra stand on the right), towards a town entrance manned by a porter. This drawing was part of Repton’s Red Book for the Royal Pavilion, submitted to the Prince of Wales in 1806. Ultimately, Repton’s designs were not used, but their influence on John Nash’s final designs are apparent.
