Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s eldest child, Victoria, the Princess Royal, had just turned two before Christmas 1842. This brooch depicts her as a winged cherub and her pose was inspired by a painting by the Italian artist Raphael (1483–1520), who Prince Albert particularly admired.
