DM 4623: a decorated tree on a table with presents, paintings, and a bracelet designed by Prince Albert. Signed, dated and inscribed.

A Victorian Christmas at Windsor Castle

Victoria and Albert spent 20 happy Christmases together at Windsor Castle

WILLIAM ESSEX (1784-1869)

Bracelet with a miniature of Prince Albert

Signed and dated 1844

RCIN 4815

This gift almost missed being ready in time, ‘Poor dear Albert was in a great way, at his 2 principal presents for me not having arrived, & I felt so sorry for his disappointment’ but it arrived later that day. The image of the prince wearing armour would become one of his wife’s favourites, reproduced in many forms, and a version of it was placed beside her bed at Osborne House. This bracelet was worn regularly by the queen for the rest of her life.

…he gave me a most lovely bracelet…It is his own exquisite taste & one of the loveliest things I ever saw…I put it on at once, & it was much admired.
