Two of the Royal Collection’s horse paintings by George Stubbs are currently on loan to the MK Gallery in Milton Keynes, for the exhibition George Stubbs: ‘all done from Nature’. The exhibition explores Stubbs’s fascination with the natural world and the innovations which earned him the moniker of ‘England’s Leonardo’. The Royal Collection loans, among the finest of the artist’s late works, help to demonstrate his experiments in depicting horses both in motion and at rest. This is the first exhibition to display Stubbs’s paintings alongside the skeleton of one of his equine subjects, Eclipse, the most successful racehorse of the 18th century.
