Hogarth’s Britons: Succession, Patriotism and the Jacobite Rebellion
10 March – 4 June 2023
As the most southerly point reached by Bonnie Prince Charlie and his forces, the city of Derby is well-positioned to stage this new exhibition on William Hogarth’s response to the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745–6. The exhibition features Hogarth’s painting of The Family of George II, made to demonstrate the artist’s concerted attempts to gain royal patronage and a court position which was not forthcoming until much later in his career. The loan also includes Hogarth’s design for the headpiece for the satirical Jacobite’s Journal which depicts an episode from the Rising of 1745.
