This was the fi rst of many works relating to the Crimean War in Victoria and Albert’s watercolour albums. Painted at an early stage of British involvement in the confl ict, it is brightly coloured and contains individual portraits of soldiers parading before their Queen, striking a note of optimism and patriotism.
