CALEB ROBERT STANLEY (1795-1868)

Brocket Hall

dated 1841

Pencil, watercolour and bodycolour | 21.7 x 32.5 cm (whole object) | RCIN 920153

Victoria and Albert visited the Prime Minister Lord Melbourne’s seat, Brocket Hall in Hatfi eld, during a tour of Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire early in their marriage. The focus of this watercolour is (perhaps surprisingly) not the grand house, which Stanley places to the left of the composition, but its idyllic setting.
