WILLIAM LEIGHTON LEITCH (1804-83)

The Swiss Cottage, Osborne House

drawn 1855

Pencil, watercolour and touches of bodycolour | 19.7 x 27.8 cm (whole object) | RCIN 919867

The Swiss Cottage was a playhouse built for the royal children within the gardens at Osborne, where they had their own space to play and learn skills such as gardening, cooking and sewing. Leitch regularly visited Osborne when the royal family were in residence, giving Victoria lessons and painting scenes of family life such as this one.
