LOUIS HAGHE (1806-85)

Queen Victoria investing Louis-Philippe with the Garter, 11 October 1844

dated 1845

Pencil, watercolour and bodycolour with gum arabic | 29.7 x 43.9 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 919793

The Order of the Garter is the oldest and most senior Order of Chivalry in Britain, and Louis-Philippe was delighted to be awarded the honour – the Queen recorded in her journal that he thanked her and Albert repeatedly. A shaft of light entering the room through the window on the right illuminates the scene.
