The Grandmother's Birthday

Signed and dated 1856

RCIN 403605

In its tender depiction of the joys of family life, this painting expresses a theme especially important to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The pyramidal arrangement resembles Renaissance depictions of the Holy Family, while the eye contact between the figures guides the viewer’s gaze around each member of the group in turn.

Purchased by Prince Albert and presented to Queen Victoria on her birthday, 24 May 1857

No. 71
