JOHANN FRIEDRICH OVERBECK (1789-1869)

Religion glorified by the Fine Arts

c. 1840

RCIN 452387

This is one of a number of surviving versions of Overbeck’s great oil painting, completed in 1840, which presents the role of art in glorifying religion. Based on Raphael’s Disputa fresco in the Vatican, it shows painters, sculptors and architects standing beneath the Virgin and Child, who are accompanied by figures from the Old and New Testaments.

Presented to Queen Victoria by Prince Albert at Christmas 1847
