Psyche lamenting the loss of Cupid

RCIN 2044

The Victorians were preoccupied with Cupid and Psyche as symbols of sacred and profane love. Theed’s statue, based on the work of his master, Thorvaldsen, was purchased for Osborne with the companion figure of Narcissus (no. 83). On the strength of this success Theed enjoyed royal patronage for the rest of his career.

Purchased by Queen Victoria in 1847
