CARL JOHANN STEINHÄUSER (1813-79)

Friedrich Ruckert

circa 1835 - 1856

RCIN 69005

The poetry of Rückert (1788–1866) is remembered chiefly through musical settings by numerous composers, including Schubert and Mahler. This portrait places him in the medieval German tradition of the Minnesänger or troubadour. Rückert lived for some years in Coburg and dedicated several of his works to Prince Albert and his brother.

Purchased by Prince Albert in 1856
