      HENRY BONE (1755-1834)

Holy Family ('The Silence') (after Annibale Carracci)

      Signed and dated 1814

      RCIN 404281

This is one of the latest in a series of large, elaborately framed enamel copies by Henry Bone after religious and mythological subjects, which were hung in the Prince Regent’s Bedroom at Carlton House. Not since the reign of Charles I had a monarch systematically commissioned miniature copies of important paintings to be enjoyed in this way. Carracci’s original had been acquired by George III and was hung at this time in the Closet at Buckingham House.

      Painted for George IV, 1814
