This is a study for Rubens’s painting of Cupid and Psyche, which depicts the moment in the myth when Psyche first catches sight of the sleeping Cupid, seated on the edge of his bed and holding a lamp above him. Rubens had recently returned from Italy, and the figure shows the almost masculine aspect that he had picked up from Michelangelo’s depictions of the female nude.
