LUCAS HORENBOUT (C. 1490/5-1544)

Henry VIII (1491-1547)

June 1526-June 1527

RCIN 420010

This is amongst the earliest portrait miniatures to be painted, and may also be the earliest surviving portrait from life of Henry VIII by his court artist. The King, aged about 35, was experimenting with a beard. Here Horenbout shows him bare-faced whilst RCIN 420640 shows him bearded.
