HERBERT GEORGE PONTING (1870-1935)

Captain Scott, R.N. CVO

Feb 1911

RCIN 2580001

Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) set out in 1910 aboard the Terra Nova for Antarctica, with the express desire to lead the first team to the South Pole. This portrait was taken at the beginning of the expedition, when Scott was confident of achieving his aim, although he already knew that Roald Amundsen was leading a Norwegian team with the same goal. Scott’s final expedition for the Pole departed from Cape Evans in November 1911.
