HENRY ROBERTSON 'BIRDIE' BOWERS (1883-1912)

Forestalled. Amundsen's tent at the South Pole

18 Jan 1912

RCIN 2580038

This photograph shows the dejection of the team as they explore the tent left by Roald Amundsen, who reached the South Pole on 14 December 1911, thirty-five days before Scott. There is a Norwegian flag at the top of the tent; inside, Scott found a letter recording their achievement, left by Amundsen in case he did not return safely.
