SIR FRANCIS CHANTREY (1781-1841)
King George IV
1837RCIN 2010
Chantrey originally created this image in 1821, the year of the coronation of George IV, showing him as an ancient field-marshal. It became the ‘official’ likeness of the king and numerous copies were made. This particular example, commissioned by William IV, was intended for display in the ‘Temple of Military Fame’ at Kew to commemorate the Prince Regent’s role in the defeat of Napoleon.
