LOUIS-FRANÇOIS ROUBILIAC (1702-62)

John, 1st Earl Ligonier (1680-1770)

circa 1760

RCIN 35256

Ligonier served in the British army for 60 years, becoming one of its most outstanding generals. He was a close confidant of George II, who invested him as a Knight of the Bath on the battlefield at Dettingen. Roubiliac sculpted this portrait from life, capturing Ligonier’s aged features with unsparing realism and showing his aggressive yet humane character. Presented to George IV in 1817 Cat. 39
