JACOPO AMIGONI (1682-1752)
Frederick, Prince of Wales (1707-51)

It is easy to see that this is by a Venetian artist, with its fresh colour, light tone, soft pastel-like touch and elegantly fanciful concept. The Prince is reading his friend Pope’s translation to Homer and is visited by some cherubs: Eternity (holding a snake biting its tail) looks admiringly at Poetry (depicted with a lyre).
Painted for George Bubb Dodington and subsequently acquired by George IV
